The project involves the Phase II capacity expansion for the existing LRT Line 1. It is a 15.4 km elevated line with 18 stations running north to south along the Taft-Rizal corridor from Baclaran in Pasay City to Monumento in Kaloocan City in Metro Manila.
The expanded capacity Line 1 was deemed adequate for a number of years of stand-alone operations. However, the ongoing construction projects for Manila Lines 2 and 3 necessitate an urgent need for further capacity expansion as required to support operations of an integrated 3-line network. The Phase II expansion will increase the passenger carrying capacity of Line 1 to 40,000 passengers per hour per direction ( pphpd ).
